Is the Great Indian Kapil Sharma Show starting again?

Published on

In a standard Indian household, men go to work, ladies cook, children play around the house and elders read or pray. The few hours at night are all they get to spend time together as a family. Over years, they develop an understanding of each member’s liking and ways of bonding. More often than not, a brown family finds a comfort show that they look forward to watching every week. Come the weekend, and they sit down in front of the television, expressing emotions as they come and truly feeling everything that they see. It’s good when it’s drama, but nothing beats comedy!

There are a lot of comedians that come and go, but few touch your hearts and make you laugh. Kapil Sharma is one of them. For years, The Kapil Sharma show has been that one bonding tie for families. Sometimes, Kapil’s witty comments, Archana Singh’s contagious laugh, Gutthi’s Baba ji ka thullu, Dr. Gulati’s innocence is all one needs to feel alright.

The ‘Bigger’ Picture

The iconic show, the Kapil Sharma show that had been airing on the National Television since 2016 had become a mass favourite. People of all ages loved it equally. There were some who would come from different parts of the country, just to watch it live. But, in 2023, it was put on halt. The break was a big let-down for fans who had gotten obsessed with watching the comedy geniuses every weekend. And this wasn’t the only time that they had taken a break. It all looks all fun and games on screen but only they know what happens behind the curtains. Sometimes, its personal matters, while at other times, it is internal disputes.

Whatever the reasons, surely, they went through it all with grace. Soon after, the premiere of the first season of the Netflix series, The Great Indian Kapil Show, was announced. It came as an even bigger surprise, appealing to a much larger audience globally. This meant that our Punjabi guy had taken his well-received comedy show to a whole new global platform. The excitement was huge but short-lived as the show was only 13 episodes long, and while one could binge-watch it, it ended before it even started. The contrast was felt more because its earlier iteration used to be longer and it had become a habit to watch the show for hours in a single go.

The Comeback

Kapil and his army knows that the audience needs him and so, the show is making a comeback with a Season 2 on September 21, 2024. There were hints of a Season 2 right after the Season 1. Kiku Sharda, one of the comedians alongside Kapid, clearly had mentioned in one of the interviews that its coming and the gap won’t be much. The fans were obviously super excited when Netflix dropped the teaser on August 21. Now everyone is just looking forward to it. Once again, there will be happy Saturday night-ins with Shanivaars becoming the Funnyvaars filled with wit, humour and lots of laughter.

The trailers are not to be missed. They convey the same sense of excitement that is now synonymous with any mention of Kapil’s grand show that feels like home to many. The fun banters, the witty dialogues, the dress-ups, the interviews, the public interaction are soul therapy. It’s not even a show anymore; it’s a festival that needs to be celebrated. The internet has been buzzing with fan comments ever since the announcement and we can’t wait either!

A Whirlwind of Emotions

While the majority of the show’s audience can’t contain the excitement, a little chunk of it had also been disappointed with Season 1. With the change in format from TV to OTT, there was also a change in the length and energy of the series, according to them. Some were disappointed that Sumona Chakravarty, who played Kapil’s wife, was not a part of the new format. However, looking at all the trailers and teasers, everyone is just curious to experience double the fun, as is promised.

What to Expect?

A double dose of laughter, of course. The energy and the mocking in the teaser itself, featuring Kapil Sharma, Archana Puran Singh, Sunil Grover, Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda and Rajiv Thakur, was enough to transfer the enthusiasm. Season 1 has been host to a lot of big stars like Ranbir Kapoor, Aamir Khan, Ed Sheeran, to name a few. With Season 2, the audience is expecting to see more such faces on their screens while they enjoy popcorn and indulge in hearty laughter sessions.

While some people don’t like the new format as such, they have faith in Kapil who delivers to the best of his abilities. He is capable enough of keeping up with the new ways of a different platform while staying rooted to his origin.

Will it be Worth the Hype?

Well, going by the face of it, the trailers are absolutely promising. Knowing Kapil Sharma and the crew, they will definitely live up to the audience’s expectations, which is now grander and more widespread. Comedy as a genre in itself looks effortless, but it takes a lot of effort. The team looks calm and composed on the outside but we, as an audience, can’t even begin to imagine the pressure they must be feeling to live up to their audience’s expectations. One thing is for sure though, that life felt empty and something felt missing with the comedy gang not around.
