What do you look forward to when you go to watch a movie’s premiere? Your favourite actors on-screen, quality time with your close ones, relaxation after hard days at work, right? It is rare that the actors you go to watch, also watch the premiere with you! It’s heartbreaking that a life was lost just so a few people could catch a fleeting glimpse of the superstar. But this is exactly what happened at the Pushpa 2’s screening at Sandhya Theater in Hyderabad on December 04, 2024.
The Tragic Night: What Exactly Happened
As everyone knows and agrees, Pushpa 2: the Rule is the most anticipated movie of the year. They screened the movie at the iconic Sandhya Theater in Hyderabad on December 4, 2024. Per usual, the crowd had gathered to watch this much-anticipated movie on the big screen. But what is more special about it is that Allu Arjun was also going to watch the premiere with them. The news spread like wildfire. The star himself had come down and was blessing the fans with his charismatic presence. Little did he or anyone know, this grand gesture could become tragic for life.
At the sight of Arjun, the crowd lost control and went crazy.At one point, the situation spiraled beyond the police’s control. They had to resort to a lathi charge to manage the otherwise uncontrollable crowd effectively. The actor has risen in popularity globally and everyone just wants to get his glimpse at any opportunity available. As a result, everyone started pushing each other to get as close to the actor as possible. Within minutes, what was in the audience became a crowd and then a stampede.
Who could imagine, though, that this excitement for a superstar could have serious repurcursions. What was meant to be a momentous occasion for the star cast turned into a nightmare. In the crowd’s push and pull to see their hero in real life, a life got compromised and several others injured. Revathi, a woman who had come with family to watch the movie, tragically lost her life in the rush. She sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared her dead upon arrival. Her nine-year-old son, who was also injured in the stampede, received immediate medical attention at the hospital.
Why did this happen?
According to speculations, the entire scenario could be avoided if there was better crowd management in the first place. Obviously, a star’s visit attracts way more crowds than usual. To host a successful premiere with a massive fan turnout, organizers must prioritize crowd management as the top arrangement to ensure safety.
Secondly, only as much crowd should be allowed as the venue can accomodate. A well organised ticketing system would ensure that. Videos from the event show that people gathered in the theatre in great numbers, more than the capacity of the venue. Strict measures could have controlled the situation and prevented it from escalating to such a tragic extent.
Management should have also arranged for more security personnel to handle the crowd when it got out of hand.
Also, the star didn’t have a different door to make the entry. His accessibility to the crowd because of the same entry and exit points worsened the situation even more.
Reality Check
The incident that has attracted attention nationwide is more of a wakeup call for organisers and concerned authorities. While the grand premiere stands as a testament to the power of cinema, nothing can come first to the public’s safety. The incident has brought to notice the amount of mismanagement and irresponsibility that took place in this single event’s handling. It is heartbreaking to even think that a woman had to lose her life to make the management take better actions in the future.
