Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the momentous inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel, colloquially referred to as the Sonamarg Tunnel, in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Narendra Modi ceremonially severed the red ribbon and officially commissioned the Sonamarg Tunnel. The occasion was further graced by the presence of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, highlighting the significance of this infrastructure milestone.
This Step Turned Vision into Reality
The Sonamarg Tunnel, also known as the Z-Morh Tunnel, is a strategic infrastructure project designed to provide year-round connectivity to Sonamarg which is a major tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir.
Spanning over 6.5 km, the tunnel traverses through the challenging terrain of the Zojila Pass, which remains snowbound during winters, and cuts off Sonamarg from the rest of the country.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Prime Minister described the tunnel as a “game-changer” for the region and also highlighted its potential to enhance trade, tourism, and mobility. “This tunnel bridges the gaps between regions and creates more opportunities for everyone,” he said.

Boosting Connectivity and Economic Growth
This step will facilitate the movement of goods and people and reduce the remove the isolation faced by local communities during harsh winters. Sonamarg, with its breathtaking meadows and snow-clad peaks, has always been a favorite among travelers.
However, its inaccessibility during winter hindered its potential as a year-round destination. The tunnel changes this situation and promises to attract visitors throughout the year and boost hospitality and allied sectors.
Strengthening National Security
The Sonamarg Tunnel also holds strategic importance for national security. Its location in a sensitive region highlights its value for defense preparedness. The tunnel ensures seamless connectivity to areas near the Line of Control and aids in the swift movement of troops and equipment.
The Prime Minister also emphasized this aspect, stating, “This infrastructure will strengthen our borders and enhance our security capabilities while bringing prosperity to the region.”
It is a Step Towards Regional Integration
Over the past few years, significant investments have been made in roadways, railways, and other infrastructure projects in the Union Territory. The tunnel is also a critical link in the ambitious Zojila Tunnel project, which aims to connect Leh and Kargil with Srinagar.
Once completed, the Zojila Tunnel will be Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel, which further enhances connectivity and boosts the economic prospects in the region.
