All isn’t well with the Trehan Group who are juggling between multiple raids carried out by the Income Tax Department. Trehan Home Developers has established itself as a leading real estate group in Rajasthan and Haryana. The raid first began on January 23, 2025 at as many as 19 locations associated with the group. More than 150 Income Tax officials raided seven locations in Alwar, seven in Gurugram, and six in Faridabad. One of these locations include their prominent project, Apna Ghar Shalimar Society in Alwar district. From the directors’ offices to their residents, nothing has escaped scrutiny. Like in any other raid scene, the laptops, bank accounts, company’s documents, everything is under examination. Reports suggest that officials seized about ₹1 crore in Alwar and ₹51 lakh in Gurugram.
The Raid: Causes and Discoveries
Any company or organisation comes under Income Tax department observation when it carries out its business unofficially to avoid paying the tax. The Trehan group, too, fell in this trap and has been under strict observation. The group includes Harsh Trehan, Renu Trehan, Saransh Trehan, Chandra Gyan Khosla, Debashish Nair, Ashok Kumar Saini, and Yashpal Saini. The Income tax department claims that the group has been alleged time and again of not reporting the cash transactions. Hence, 23 teams conducted the raid to gather evidence supporting these claims. Upon intense scrutiny, the team discovered documents revealing unreported cash transactions worth approximately ₹100 crore in land purchases. These transactions point towards substantial tax evasion.
The raid that began on early Thursday morning and involved such a vast team and so many personnels didn’t go to waste. Officials have seized about unaccounted ₹1 crore in Alwar and ₹51 lakh in Gurugram. And, that’s not it. They also confiscated gold and cash worth ₹19 crore from the company’s directors’ residences in Alwar, Gurugram, and Faridabad. These have been seized as the owners could not provide a definite and justified source of these assets.
One more interesting finding of this raid is that the builders bought agricultural land at a lower price, and converted it into residential projects at increased prices. This is also assumed to be a tactic to avoid paying the tax.
The Result
The Trehan Group had positioned itself as a prominent member in the field with vast projects in Gurugram and Faridabad.
However, anything done with dishonesty has to meet its ultimate fate, some day or the other. The Group’s insincerity too couldn’t stand long. The raid, which was an obvious outcome, has revealed that the group has been gambling in crores. The company is suffering the losses it called upon itself. But, what it also raises more important questions about the operations and such practices prevailing in the real estate sector. How has the company been able to indulge in such practices without coming in notice? Does it mean someone more powerful has hands in the game too? Nothing can be said until deeper investigation is done.
On the other hand, the competitors are anticipating any regulatory changes and their implications on business operations. People’s trust, too, has gone hayway, ever since the news broke out. Looking at this, the industry experts firmly recommend more transparency and adherence to ethical standards to restore public trust.
The incident serves as a reminder to carry out one’s duty with full honesty and good conduct. Anything done otherwise can have serious implications for the firm and for the individuals involved. Money plays a huge role and has the power to blind anyone. It is up to oneself to stay true to their ethics and carry out a business as one ought to.
Conclusion
The company is still under the Income Tax Department’s eyes and cannot escape the scrutiny for at least some time now. Now that their gamble has come to surface, they will have to face the repercussions. Be it cooperating with the authorities or reassessing its financial practices, they’ll have to do it all. This may have even more far reaching consequences for the culprits which we cannot even think of right now.
However, what is also concerning is that the business might get challenging for others too, even if they haven’t ever indulged in such malpractices. It has both good and bad connotations. Now, they’ll have a fairer play, but they’ll also have to put extra efforts to win back people’s trust because one group mishandled it. Nonetheless, the industry has its eyes hooked as to what would happen next and how it would affect their business.
Let us all hope for a future where integrity and ethics are at the core of any business.
