UPI Transactions at Risk: Special Characters in your UPI ID Could Cause Problems from February 01!

Published on

For all the tech-savvy, up-to-date Indian consumers ready to make payments at the click of a button, we have news. The world and payment processing surely became a lot easier ever since we’ve switched to going cash-free. You don’t have to worry about carrying a wallet every time you step out because everything’s literally on the phone. Coffee date with bestie? UPI’s got you covered. Impulsive shopping or emergency chemist store visits? Get anything with just a tap on your phone.

But, maybe, it will not be so easy due to National Payment Corporation of India’s latest update. The NPCI has ruled out that any UPI transaction ID containing special characters like @, #, $, %, -, or; will be declared irrelevant w.e.f. February 01, 2025. Surprised? Well, this is going to be the reality in a few hours from now. It goes without saying that this update will affect the users, and especially businesses drastically, at least for some time until everyone adapts. But, what till then? And why this sudden roll out of a new mandate? Let’s find out.

The Reason Behind the Rule

First of all, what seems like a ‘sudden’ roll out of a new rule is actually not so. The NPCI is the governing body of UPI and is responsible for the security and efficiency in digital transactions. UPIs are very common now and almost everyone makes transactions using their UPI IDs. Initially, the banks and payment apps were generating these UPI transaction IDs using different formats. Some included special characters, while others followed a more structured approach.

The inconsistency in the formats posed many problems, like transaction failures, technical errors, difficulty in fulfilling the payment due to differences in formats, and even more serious implications like fraud and cybersecurity risks.

Taking these issues in account, the NPCI had, in March 2024, had ordered all banks and UPI participants to generate UPI IDs having only alphanumeric characters, i.e. 0-9 and A-Z. Some complied, while others continued with their practices, without paying much heed. So, NPCI took the stricter route this year, clearly stating that all non-compliant transactions will be declared invalid.

What Does the Change Mean

Are you someone who falls back on their UPI a bit too often? Then this change is going to impact you and your chores. How? Imagine, you’ve just taken a cab somewhere and need to pay the driver. You aren’t carrying cash. Cash is not even on your mind because you know you’ve got UPI handy. You open the payment app and try to pay, but the payment is unsuccessful. Instead, you get the least desirable message of ‘payment failure’ or ‘try again’. You try again but it doesn’t work. Turns out, it wasn’t a glitch but a new rule that declares your UPI ID irrelevant. And now, you’re stuck in the middle of the road with a payment to make and no money in hand. This is one of the worst feelings, especially when you even have money in the account, but just aren’t able to pay.

If this happens with someone who isn’t even aware about the latest rule, it will only lead to a situation of panic and frustration. With India being such a big country with a billion UPI users, this panic situation is the most obvious outcome.

Plus, it’s going to be inconvenient not just for the consumers, but also the businesses. Suppose you are a shopkeeper and a girl buys something from your store. Her payment fails even after three trials. Out of embarrassment or frustration, she’ll just leave the stuff to buy later. Whose loss? Yours. Especially if you or your customer are unaware about this change, they will just keep skipping the purchase until either of you find out the actual issue.

What Can You Do

By the way, congratulations! You’re one of the very few who now know about this change. Before immersing yourself in the day’s chores, there are a few things you can do to avoid any hassle.

First and foremost thing is updating your UPI app. If you really do not want to be stuck in inconvenience, you must have your payment app updated. Ever since the rule has been announced, developers are working to comply with the terms. Then, make sure your transaction ID doesn’t have special characters. If you experience payment failures, reaching out to your bank or payment service provider would be a good idea.

Last but not the least, a little awareness goes a long way. You never know whose day you make easier just by spreading the information you possess. A friend, a colleague, a neighbour, or even a stranger could be unaware and you could enlighten them.

Conclusion: Be Prepared, Stay Informed

The NPCI’s decision may seem unnecessary and problematic to many right now, but is actually a wise move. Its introduction would help to ensure a secure and smooth transaction process.

However, such a large population might not be able to get through it in one go. Confusion and disruptions are obvious, especially with so many UPI transactions happening on a daily basis.

To avoid any inconvenience, one must update their payment apps and stay updated themselves with any new relevant information.
