January 10 – World Hindi Day

Did you know when Hindi was first spoken at the UN? It was 1949 when the Hindi language was first spoken in UNGA. In 2006, Dr. Manmohan Singh declared that ‘World Hindi Day’ would be commemorated annually on January 10. The main objective of celebrating this day is to spread and promote the Hindi language.

January 12 – National Youth Day

This day is observed to honour the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, widely known as Swami Vivekananda Jayanti. His work and dedication are a great source of inspiration. Based on his work, the Government decided to celebrate this day as National Youth Day or Rashtriya Yuva Diwas.

January 13 – Lohri festival

Marking the beginning of the harvest season, Lohri is celebrated every year on 13th January, especially in Punjab, Chandigarh, and Haryana. In northern India, this festival is celebrated with full enthusiasm and happiness. People light a bonfire, stand around them, and offer jaggery, rewri, rice, and popcorn. They also dance to enjoy this festive occasion.

January 14 – Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti is known by many names, such as Makara Sankranti in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Telangana, Pongal in Tamil Nadu (TN), Magh Bihu in Assam, and Magha Mela in north and central parts of India. Celebrated right after Lohri, this day signifies the conclusion of the cold winter months. From this point, the sun starts its northward movement, often referred to as Uttarayana. It also marks the onset of the harvest season, and brings new hopes and prosperity.

January 15 – Indian Army Day

This day is celebrated to remember when General KM Cariappa became the first commander-in-chief of the Indian Army of Independent India. For Indians, this day is as significant as a festival, as General KM Cariappa assumed charge from the British Commander-in-Chief, General Sir FRR Bucher in 1949. 

January 16 – National Startup Day

In 2021, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, announced 16 January as National Startup Day. On this day, people promote and appreciate Indian startups and remember their role in improving India’s economic conditions.

January 17 – Benjamin Franklin Day

This is one of the most important days in January 2025 in the USA as it marks Benjamin Franklin’s birth anniversary. He is known for investing so many things, such as the Franklin stove, the lightning rod, the glass armonica, and the concept of positive and negative electrical charges. January 23 – Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti

January 24 – National Girl Child Day

This day is celebrated every year to raise awareness about the inequalities faced by girl children and to discuss ways to uplift and support them.

January 25 – National Voters Day/ Rashtriya Matdata Diwas

National Voters’ Day is observed to inspire young citizens to exercise their voting rights and actively participate in the democratic process.

January 26 – Republic Day

Republic Day celebrates the adoption of the Indian Constitution, symbolising the nation’s transition into a sovereign republic. January 30 – Shaheed Diwas

Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs’ Day, is observed every year on January 30 in memory of Mahatma Gandhi and his contributions to India.

World Leprosy Day is observed on the last Sunday of January each year. Its primary goal is to raise awareness about leprosy-related disabilities, particularly in children.
