India’s Visionary Leader and Former PM Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92

Published on

Dr. Manmohan Singh, ‘one of India’s most distinguished leaders’, as quoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, passed away at 92. The demise took place at Delhi’s AIIMS emergency department to where family members rushed him when his health saw a decline. As per reports, he was already seeking treatment for age-related illnesses. But on Thursday, December 26, 2024, he experienced a sudden loss of consciousness. He was given CPR and was rushed to AIIMS in a critical position. Doctors tried their best but sadly, was declared dead at 9:51 P.M.

Man of few words but great impact

Today, India has lost another gem. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was a PM later. But, before that he was an economist who led India to the path of success with his economic reforms. Throughout his tenure, people knew him as the PM who didn’t speak much. But as they say, actions speak louder than words, and he proved it right. With a calm demeanour and a sharp intellect, he went on to serve the nation and win hearts. He may have come from a humble background, but his actions won him admiration in India and abroad.

Born on September 26, 1932 in a place now in Pakistan, he had to migrate with his family to India owing to the Partition. But, he was a scholar who didn’t let anything wear him down. He excelled in his studies, earning degrees from some of the best Institutes, including Cambridge and Oxford. He developed interest in economics and earned a doctorate in the subject from the University of Cambridge.

Later, as India’s Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, he led India onto a progressive journey. He not only introduced transformative reforms, but also pulled India out of an economic collapse and led it towards growth. It was so impactful that soon India became a global market.

A few years down the line, Singh became India’s 13th Prime Minister in 2004. What is even more inspiring is that he was the first Sikh to hold such a high position, that too for two consecutive terms, up until 2014. During his tenure, India saw internal growth, more job opportunities, rural development and a stable economy. He wouldn’t speak much but his acts, like the MGNREGA and Right to Information, helped many Indians. There’s a reason why he is known as ‘the silent reformer’.

Going Above and Beyond

Manmohan Singh didn’t contribute to India’s growth just as its Finance Minister and later Prime Minister. Instead, he contributed a great deal as also the Chief Economic Advisor, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and the head of the Planning Commission, at different times. All his contributions are noticed, appreciated and held in high regard. His dedication to raise India to great heights have earned him the respect of millions. Today, youngsters and adults alike, see him as their role model and follow the path he has paved.

He will be remembered dearly, not only for his outstanding contributions, but also to show that great transformations don’t always necessarily need great words. His legacy will have a lasting impact that generations to come will look up to and derive inspiration from.

Conclusion

Singh’s passing has saddened the entire nation and has marked the end of an era. India is thankful that it found the right leader at the right time when it needed him the most. The country could see major economic progress at that time only because of the then Finance Minister’s analytical and problem-solving nature.

Today, as we say goodbye to one of the greatest leaders India has seen, his legacy lives on in his policies. Rest in Peace, dear former Prime Minister – a true public servant and a giant leader.
