If you thought South India was only about backwaters and temples, maybe it’s about time you checked your general knowledge.
India now boasts its first-ever 77-meter-long glass bridge overseeing the sparkling water of the oceans underneath! Where? In the southernmost coastal town- Kanyakumari! Who would’ve thought that out of all places, Kanyakumari would summon all adventurers and histographers alike to gather in one place?
Well, it’s here and it’s huge! Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, Mr. MK Stalin, inaugurated the bridge on December 30, 2024. 25 years ago on the same day, the grand Thiruvallavur statue was also installed. He even posted a video on his social media for everyone to have a look at the beauty.

Imagine standing on a floor but not the conventional cemented floor. You look down and you can see through it! And what’s the view? It’s the lush waters of the sea below. You move your gaze around and you can spot the majestic Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the 133-feet high Thiruvalluvar statue. These attractions were earlier accessible only by ferry. But thanks to the innovative inauguration of this glass bridge, people can now walk conveniently to these while enjoying the breathtaking view.
Why is it so Special?
First of all, we aren’t talking about just any glass bridge. It is India’s first ever glass bridge and that too, built 77 metres long and 10 metres wide in an aesthetic bowstring arch design. It stands magnificently in such an amazing location: in Kanyakumari over the seas, connecting the two most famous Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the 133-feet high Thiruvalluvar statue. Not just that, it is built with engineering perfection to stand the tests of time, including the harsh coastal conditions.
The construction cost a total of Rs. 37 Crore but what has come out of it is just spectacular. Visitors can walk on the glass and enjoy all the feels. Authorities have taken care to use only the best tempered glass to ensure safety while offering the clearest view through the glass. It is an unmatched experience altogether – walking on glass, enjoying the view of water below, coastal wind and an adrenaline rush. This bridge not only takes India ahead in the infrastructure game, but also improves the local tourism sector.
And especially today, where every piece of architecture is defined by whether it is ‘Instagram-worthy’ or not, this is a must visit. Of course, it’s going to take some real guts to walk on it, but as they say, no guts, no glory. And what you’ll witness and feel once you lay your foot on it, it is going to be otherworldly. Every step and every picture will convey a story and you will take back an experience of a lifetime.
Conclusion
So, if visiting Kanyakumari for this masterpiece is not on your bucket list or 2025 vision board, add it right away! We are sure you wouldn’t want to miss this breathtaking view. So, don’t just hear it from others. It’s time for you to pack your bags, experience the pounding of the heart and meet India’s yet another wonder.
