In late 2024, reports from China revealed a sudden increase in respiratory illnesses which led to overcrowded hospitals, especially in Hunan province. Videos and images shared online showed packed medical centers and worried families. This whole thing has a distinct ‘early COVID’ vibe. Health experts soon identified that the root cause of this is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). The etiological agent implicated in this HMPV Virus Outbreak is the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a pathogen first identified in 2001.

What is HMPV?

HMPV is a negative-sense single-stranded RNA virus that belongs to the Pneumoviridae family and is closely related to the Avian metapneumovirus subgroup C. Despite its relatively recent discovery, serological evidence suggests that HMPV, or a closely related virus, has been already circulating in human populations for at least half a century. This HMPV virus outbreak has heightened awareness of its potential impact on public health.

Symptoms of HMPV

HMPV appears with symptoms akin to those of influenza or the common cold, such as:

• Cough
• Fever
• Stuffy or runny nose
• Difficulty breathing

Current Situation in China

In China, the number of HMPV cases has risen sharply, causing concern.

HMPV cases are on the rise in Malaysia. In 2024, the country reported 327 cases, marking a 45% increase from the 225 cases recorded in 2023. This HMPV virus outbreak comes as respiratory illnesses are also being reported in other countries, such as China.

Despite these figures, health officials have assured the public that this spike is typical for the season and not a cause for panic. Globally, neighbouring countries have adopted a posture of vigilance.

What Are Other Countries Doing?

Neighboring countries like Hong Kong, Malaysia, and India are closely monitoring the situation.

Malaysia has reported a slight rise in cases compared to last year, and India recently detected its first two cases in Bengaluru.

Governments are urging people to remain calm but stay careful.

Preventive Measures of HMPV Transmission

At present, no dedicated vaccine or antiviral therapy exists for HMPV, and it makes proactive prevention crucial. Apart from this, one can adopt the following stringent measures:

• Meticulously sanitize your hands using soap and water, ensuring an exhaustive cleansing process lasting no less than 20 seconds.
• Obstruct respiratory emissions by covering your mouth and nose with a disposable tissue or the flexed angle of your elbow while coughing or sneezing, therapy curbing the dissemination of pathogens.
• Refrain from proximity to individuals exhibiting signs of illness to curtail potential exposure.
• Sanitize frequently handled surfaces, such as doorknobs and mobile devices, to maintain a hygienic environment. 

For healthcare professionals, adhering rigorously to hygiene protocols and infection control standards is imperative for safeguarding both patients and medical staff.

Why HMPV Virus Outbreak Matters

This outbreak highlights the critical need for robust preparedness against infectious diseases. Although the current situation in China presents challenges, public health professionals emphasize that it can be effectively addressed through appropriate interventions.

The proliferation of misinformation, particularly across social media platforms, has the potential to incite unwarranted apprehension. 

Transparent and precise dissemination of information by health authorities is crucial to ensuring the populace remains well-informed and grounded in factual understanding.
