A Gripping New Era
Created by Korean writer and producer Hwang Dong-hyuk, this South Korean dystopian thriller’s Season 1 had a dramatic end. Player number 456, aka Seong Gi-hun, was the sole survivor and the game’s winner, despite his multiple attempts to escape. Where season 1 showed different aspects of his personality like optimism, Season 2 is nothing like that. It focuses more on his determination to take revenge for his traumatic past. He re-enters the deadly world of games to find out who the masterminds behind the game are and why they do what they do. This time, it’s not about the cash prize.
Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, has portrayed a strong transformed character of a man with determination. He has a vision, a mission to expose the ruthless and to seek revenge for the betrayals he faced in Season 1.
New Characters, New Challenges
Because Season 1 had ended with all other characters’ killings, it was necessary to introduce new ones this season. This has added to the thrill of the season. What do the new entries bring along? A lot! The tension, the complexity- all combine to give the viewer jaw-dropping moments. Every character, including Myung-gi, Player 333, Dae-ho, Player 388, Gyeong-seok, (Player 246), Hyun-ju, (Player 120), Yong-sik, (Player 007), Geum-ja, (Player 149), Jung-bae, (Player 390), Jun-hee (Player 222), has come with his own demons. What does remain similar in both the seasons, though, is the uncertainty, twists and betrayal.
Is it worth the hype?

Totally! Season 2 has gone much beyond being just a survival game. It has come down to an emotional level where we get to see the contestants’ real struggles and their dark side. After Season 1’s stellar performance not just nationally, but globally, the bar was set too high. To reach it, and then cross it, demanded something very extra-ordinary. The writer didn’t only just take the challenge but also aced it! Hwang has carefully taken the delicate topics of morality, power and greed and suspensefully woven them into a story that is not only soul-gripping but also thought-provoking.
Conclusion
Very few sequels turn out to be as good but the writer has nailed it with Squid game Season 2. Think of it as Season 1, but improvised, advanced and amplified.
If you haven’t yet watched it, you’re missing out on the rush you’d been craving. Enter once again into the twisted world and be one with Gi-hun in uncovering the mysteries of this nasty place. But here’s a flash warning: Don’t proceed if you have real-world engagements because once you start, you won’t be able to stop! It is that exciting and addictive.
So, this holiday season, you know what to do. Grab some popcorn, turn off the light, and go to Netflix where this new Season has already premiered.
