What is the 8th Pay Commission & How Does It Impact Salary Structure?

Published on

On Thursday, the Union Cabinet announced the incorporation of the 8th Pay Commission to improve the salary structure in India. This approval will impact the salaries of around 50 lakh government employees, especially those working in the central government, and approximately 65 lakh pensioners. According to a government spokesperson, the new Pay Commission will improve government employee salaries and revise the current Dearness Allowance (DA).

According to Ashwini Vaishnaw, Information and Broadcasting Minister, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to revise the salary structure and implement the new Pay Commission. He also clarified that the scope of this Pay Commission is limited exclusively to central government employees. While the exact date for the implementation of this commission has not been decided, the commission will soon have its chairman and two members appointed.

What is the 8th Pay Commission?

The 8th Pay Commission, established by the Government of India (GOI), is responsible for revising the salary or remuneration structure of central government employees and pensioners. The commission ensures a hike in pay and allowances for its beneficiaries.

Let’s understand this with an example:

Suppose an individual working in the central government has a salary of Rs. 18,000. After the implementation of the new Pay Commission, the individual’s salary will be hiked from Rs. 18,000 to around Rs. 40,000 or more.

Benefits of 8th Pay Commission

Let’s explore the key benefits central government employees will receive once it is implemented.

#1 Hike in Salary

Once the new Pay Commission is fully implemented, the central government employees and pensioners will see an increase in their salary structure. This improvement will enhance their salary range and ensure they receive an increased salary for the same work they were doing under the previous salary structure.

#2 Increased Allowances

The latest Pay Commission not only increases salaries but also boosts allowances such as Dearness allowances (DA) to address contemporary needs.

#3 Also, A Hike in Pensions

Not only salaries the new Pay Commission will also impact pensions, as pensioners will notice an increase in their pension amount. This adjustment will help them to live fear-free after retirement.

#4 A Way to Cope with Inflation

With inflation at its peak, it has become increasingly difficult to manage everyday expenses with stagnant salaries. However, the implementation of the new Pay Commission will ensure increased salaries for central government employees and help them cope better with rising costs.

Why is there a need for an 8th Pay Commission?

It has been 10 years since the launch of the 7th Pay Commission, and during this time, inflation has consistently risen. The decision to implement the new Pay Commission will help central government employees and pensioners cope with the financial support needed to combat inflation effectively.
