The Maha Kumbh Mela, one that happens after several years, already holds a very significant place in every Indian’s heart. This year, it will take place from January 13 to February 26 in Prayagraj. What adds to its significance is Apple co-founder late Steve Jobs’ widow, Ms. Laurene also attending the event. A philanthropist on a spiritual journey, she came to India to attend this once-in-a-lifetime event. But before that, she also visited Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi to offer her prayers.
Ms. Laurene’s visit is significant because it depicts that our spirituality and traditions go much beyond our borders.
Laurene Powell Jobs at Kashi Vishwanath Temple
Before heading to Triveni Sangam in Pragyaraj, Ms. Laurene made a religious stop at Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi to offer her prayers. As per Hindu traditions, she wore a pink suit and covered her head with a white dupatta. Swami Kailashanand Giri Maharaj from the Niranjani Akhara accompanied her to offer her prayers. Devoted to lord Shiva, the temple holds deep importance for Hindus. So, following the custom, she, a non-Hindu, offered prayers only from the outer section of the sanctum sanctorum. She wholeheartedly respected the rule that prohibited her from touching the shivling. Swami ji also gave her the name ‘Kamala’ meaning lotus and signifying purity. Ms. Laurene included a smooth completion of Maha Kumbh Mela in her prayers.
Processions at Pragyaraj
The event that commenced on January 13 in Pragyaraj attracted thousands and lakhs of devotees. Ms. Laurene also actively participated in the processions, completely immersing herself in the spiritual practices. However, during the proceedings, she developed some allergies due to being in such a crowded place. During her Kalpvas, she is expected to stay in a temporary accommodation near the Sangam of Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati rivers. Anyone who observes Kalpvas must also take holy dips, called Amrit Snan, in the sacred rivers.
What is Kalpvas?
Kalpvas is a spiritual discipline observed during the maha Kumbh Mela. It is a period of complete devotion where devotees from around the world renounce worldly pleasures and engage in spirituality. This encourages living a life of simplicity, dedication, and worship while focusing on inner purification and spiritual growth.
In Hinduism, it has great significance and dates back to a celestial battle when drops of nectar of immortality fell on earth in four locations. Pragyaraj was one of those locations. Now, it is believed that bathing in these sacred rivers washes away one’s sins and frees him from the cycle of rebirth.
A Global Reach
Laurene Powell Jobs’ involvement in the Maha Kumbh Mela underscores the universal appeal of spirituality. As a prominent entrepreneur and philanthropist, Powell Jobs has long been associated with initiatives that promote education, environmental sustainability, and social justice. Her visit to India highlights the intersection of spiritual growth and global citizenship.
Of late, Maha Kumbh Mela has gained a lot of attention on a global platform attracting not only pilgrims but also seekers of culture, philosophy, and spirituality. Ms. Laurene’s presence adds to the event’s reputation as a melting pot of faith and humanity.
Conclusion
Laurene Powell Jobs’ active participation in the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 serves as a testament to the festival’s universal appeal and the timeless allure of India’s spiritual traditions.
