Chess has always been considered as a mind sport, acing which requires ultimate skill. It is so competitive that Chess Championships are held worldwide and the winners are kept in high regard. It is not a child’s play, but today, Gukesh Dommaraju is challenging this belief. At such a young age of 18, he is making headlines as he has grabbed the title of World Chess Champion! The nation is proud of him as he beats the former world champion Ding Liren to acquire the place.
The Journey of Determination and Dedication
Born in Chennai in 2006, Gukesh had developed a keen interest in Chess at a very young age. In an earlier interview, he had mentioned that he wanted to become World Chess champion. His parents knew he would achieve this goal, and stood by him through it all. Though, maybe even they didn’t know that their son would achieve the title very soon. His journey towards becoming a Chess prodigy had begun long ago when he became the second youngest Chess grandmaster at the age of 12, in 2019. After that, his Chess lessons started, beginning with an hour long and thrice a week classes. He considers Viswanathan Anand as his idol.
Reaching where he is today wasn’t an easy path. Gukesh and his parents had to make a lot of sacrifices for him to realise his dream. Gukesh’s father, Rajnikanth, an ENT surgeon, had to give up practice to travel with his son for his tournaments. During that time, his mother, Padma, a microbiologist, became the only breadwinner for their family. There was a time that they were so short on money that his father’s friend had to sponsor Gukesh’s expenses. Nonetheless, the family stuck together and sailed through all the hardships to reach a point only few even dream of.
The Final Showdown
To say the least, the game between Gukesh and Ding Liren was a mystery. When two champions sit face to face, anything can happen. The game was a rollercoaster, with few twists here and few turns there. Not a single moment passed when the game didn’t make the spectators wonder what’s coming next.
Though Gukesh found himself in a testing position at some point, he quickly overcame it, staying true to his reputation. His knowledge and presence of mind, while maintaining a calm composure helped him make his dream a reality.
This tournament wasn’t just a game or a competition. To even sit in Ding Liren’s opposition is an honour and Gukesh realises that. Yet, he didn’t let it overwhelm him and kept his calm.
