The Rise of Death Toll and Path to Recovery
Days have passed since the 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar on March 28, 2025. The full extent of the disaster is now coming to light. The catastrophe, as is its nature, has brought about severe destruction and loss. Buildings, bridges, and infrastructure-everything is just rubble at this point. So many people have lost their lives while so many are yet to be saved. As of now, the death toll has surpassed 2,700, while more than 4,500 people have been injured in the accident. Moreover, about 450 individuals are still missing. Rescue teams are on the clock, but the chances of finding lost individuals are scanty. As per UNICEF, children are the most affected by the crumbling disaster in Myanmar, describing the situation as one of deep trauma and widespread destruction.
With such damage as Myanmar has incurred, the road to recovery is an uphill battle.
How have other Countries Come Forward
The crisis has now become an International concern and help has fled globally. Countries have been quick in extending their support in whatever form they can.
The United Kingdom has sent emergency aid, and provided food, water, temporary shelters, and medical supplies to the most affected regions. British humanitarian organizations are also on the ground, working alongside local responders.
India, under its ‘Operation Brahma’ has sent an 80-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team equipped with cutting-edge search-and-rescue equipment. It has also sent naval ships carrying 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including medical kits and food supplies. Additionally, the country is also planning to establish a field hospital with a team of 118 personnel to assist the injured.
China, Russia and Singapore have sent disaster relief teams, emergency aid, and monetary help to support the recovery in Myanmar.
The UN has activated its emergency response mechanisms, with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Red Cross distributing essential provisions. NGOs are also working to provide psychological support for affected individuals.
Life Amidst Death
However, even amidst the tragedy, someone finds their ray of hope somewhere. In the aftermath of the Earthquake in Myanmar, a 63-year-old woman was pulled out from the rubble after being trapped for 91 hours. This was no less than a miracle. Similarly, in Mandalay, over 400 people have been rescued. This is all thanks to the tireless efforts of the rescue teams who have been on it for days now.
However, this does not take away the fact that now, with each gust of wind in Myanmar, there is the smell of dead bodies everywhere.
Conclusion
Myanmar’s earthquake crisis is far from over, but gladly, the countries have come together with their support. With that, Myanmar can hope to climb the ladder of recovery soon. The days ahead will be challenging, but with coordinated efforts, both within the country and beyond, Myanmar can start rebuilding.
