What could be more tragic for a nation than a young man preferring suicide over falling in the legal trap? An hour long video has surfaced that Atul Subhash himself recorded before taking his own life. He was a 34 years old software engineer residing in Bengaluru. The reason for suicide? Familial issues, extortion, harassment, legal actions. Not just the video, Atul has left behind a 24 page note where he has accused his wife and her family of dragging him towards this extreme step. Now, the case has received widespread attention and sparked debates. Are laws only for men? s it not murder when someone is pushed to suicide due to unbearable torture?
What happened to Atul Subhash?
Atul, a 34-years old software engineer resided in Bengaluru but was originally from Uttar Pradesh. He married Nikita in 2019 and the couple had a child the following year.
On December 10, 2024, Atul Subhash chose to end his life, citing the oppressive and corrupt legal system as a key factor driving his decision. He hanged himself in his residence. A placard on the body, when found, read “Justice is due”. He has left behind a 24 page note accusing his wife, Nikita Singhania and her family, of dragging him towards this extreme step. He expressed dissatisfaction with the legal system involved in his case. Atul has mentioned that his wife’s family demanded Rs. 3 crore to settle legal actions filed against him. Additionally, they also demanded huge amounts to visit their minor son.
On the other hand, his wife and her family deny these allegations. In fact, they say that Atul and his family demanded dowry from them. They also blame Atul for her father’s sudden death. Nikita had earlier filed dowry charges against Atul and family back in 2022.
In the death note, Atul also mentioned dissatisfaction with the legal system, particularly with judge Anita Kaushik whom he openly called out as corrupt. In the video, Atul has mentioned how he was harassed and was not even properly heard by the judge. The judicial proceedings didn’t follow a proper system. He has revealed the corruption that takes place for one to attend the court hearings.
The Fallout
Atul’s brother has filed an FIR against Nikita, her brother Piyush, mother Nisha and uncle Sushil as responsible for his death. At the same time, police are investigating to get to the core of the matter.
In a dramatic turn of events, Nikita’s family is believed to have vacated their Jaunpur home to escape the arrest.
Wider Implications
The case has drawn attention on the fact that how harassment, mental torture, extortion, corruption can lead to a man taking his own life. Atul’s frustration at the entire system is visible in the viral video. He didn’t want his family to suffer more because of him and so thought it better to commit suicide. On a wider note, the case has put light on gender biased laws and judicial accountability. Men’s rights foundations, such as Ekam Nyay foundation have stepped in to take this matter to the apex.
Conclusion
Atul’s story is as saddening as it is disturbing. In an age where we fight for women’s rights and think we are moving towards empowerment, we may actually be failing as a nation. Men’s harassment cases don’t come out as much. Yet, so many of them commit suicide because their partners take undue advantage of being a woman. It is so heartbreaking that a man had to take his own life to set an example.
Investigations relating to the matter are on and hopefully, the guilty are punished.
